We're able to think about -- and navigate -- our world because the more particular items that populate it share common denominators: as they're traditionally called, universals. How do we distinguish real from ersatz common denominators? How are these universals and particulars connected to one another? What does the process of implementing a universal in a particular look like? How do you conduct an in-depth investigation of such a common denominator? How can we make sense of analogies, and of analogical reasoning? We will read a range of treatments, from Plato to Nelson Goodman and David Lewis.
